Program Overview

The Orthopaedic Summit 2017 will offer a diverse and international perspective on the latest techniques in arthroplasty and arthroscopy, as well as sports medicine of the knee, shoulder, hip and foot/ankle, trauma and spine. The Course will feature cutting-edge, industry-sponsored, cadaveric and live surgical demonstrations (non-CME), lunch time symposia, rapid-fire debates, and small group discussions to enhance collaborations and provide networking opportunities to enhance patient care.

Learning Outcome

Course participants will demonstrate comprehensive professional knowledge of current research related to arthroplasty, arthroscopy and sports medicine of the knee, shoulder, hip, foot/ankle, trauma and spine to improve health care outcomes.

Educational Objectives

After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:


  • Summarize current controversial issues in shoulder surgery.
  • Evaluate and create a patient's treatment plan that provides for non-operative, operative, and rehabilitation regimes.
  • Understand the surgical steps required to treat rotator cuff, labral pathology, adhesive capsulitis, and degenerative conditions of the shoulder.
  • Evaluate evidence-based studies and apply the results to clinical scenarios.


  • Evaluate treatment options for meniscal and ligamentous injuries.
  • Understand controversial issues in ACL surgery.
  • Evaluate clinical scenarios to provide appropriate treatment regimens for patients with chondral injuries.
  • Understand non-operative and rehabilitative methods when treating orthopaedic sports medicine patients.


  • Identify appropriate pathology when evaluating MRI and arthroscopic images of the hip.
  • Understanding the role of the arthroscope in treating labral pathology and the most up-to-date procedures of the hip.
  • Understand how to avoid complications when performing arthroscopic intervention of the hip.
  • Manage rehabilitative techniques post-surgical intervention.

Elbow, Wrist, Hand:

  • Understand the principles of elbow and wrist arthroscopy to safely perform across multiple pathologies.
  • Evaluate and develop an appropriate comprehensive plan of care for patients presenting with elbow collateral ligament injuries.
  • Understand the basic science of lateral epicondylitis to appropriately determine the best management options for patients.
  • Evaluate the evidence surrounding the principles of fracture management in the elbow, wrist and hand.


  • Understand controversial issues in cervical spine and lumbar spine injuries.
  • Evaluate the evidence to identify best practice for the management of spinal deformities.
  • Understand surgical principles and indications for cervical and lumbar spine injuries.
  • Summarize potential complications of spinal surgery and identify principles to avoid these complications as well as best management of complications when they arise.


  • Understand the principles of orthopaedic trauma injuries to recognize indications for surgical intervention.
  • Understand principles of assessment and stabilization of traumatic upper and lower extremity fractures.
  • Recognize the pathophysiology of high energy trauma injuries and prioritize clinical scenarios that require emergent intervention.
  • Evaluate current concepts and outcomes in the surgical management of upper and lower extremity fracture stabilization.
  • Summarize complications in the treatment of high energy upper and lower extremity trauma injuries and identify an algorithm for management.


  • Understand the principles of ankle arthroscopy to safely perform across multiple pathologies.
  • Evaluate and develop an appropriate comprehensive plan of care for patients presenting with ankle injuries.
  • Understand the basic science of osteochondral lesions of the talar dome, ankle instability, and tendinopathies of the foot and ankle to appropriately determine the best management options for patients.
  • Evaluate the evidence related to the principles of fracture management in the foot and ankle and the utility of ankle arthroscopy in the treatment of ankle fractures.
  • Review the indications for hindfoot and midfoot fusions and evaluate the literature supporting the performance of these procedures arthroscopically.
  • Evaluate the procedure for posterior ankle arthroscopy in the treatment of intra articular and extra articular pathology of the hindfoot including os trigonum and posterior ankle impingement, flexor hallucis longus tenosynovitis, and Haglund’s excision.

Practice Management:

  • Explain the proper procedures for ethical orthopaedic coding.
  • Understand provider obligations when signing as an in-network provider to an insurance company.
  • Summarize the role of the RUC, and other eponyms, important to coding and reimbursement.
  • Understand what bundling is and how to avoid it when coding orthopaedic procedures.

Medical Education Resources (MER) (BOC AP#P8751) is approved by the Board of Certification, Inc. to provide continuing education to Athletic Trainers. This program is eligible for a maximum of 31 EBP Category hours/CEUs. ATs should claim only those hours actually spent in the educational program.

Physical Therapy Credit

CCUs are a unit of relative value of an activity based on its evaluation against a rigorous and comprehensive set of standards representing the quality of an activity. CE credits in Podiatric Medicine and Surgery are awarded by the New York College of Podiatric Medicine, which is an approved provider of CE in Podiatric Medicine by the Council on Podiatric Medical Education. The Foot & Ankle Session is awarded 9.1 hours CE, and the Trauma Session is awarded 4.7 hours CE, for a total of 13.8 hours of CE if both sessions are attended.
